The 2025 Academy Awards nominees were some of the least predictable in ages, with major blockbusters (Wicked, Dune: Part Two), critical darlings (Anora, The Brutalist), formally provocative art films (The Substance, Nickel Boys), and polarizing curveballs (Emilia Pérez… Emilia Pérez) all vying for the top prizes with near equal potential. No one movie had the atomic momentum of Oppenheimer (not to mention Barbie) to make the awards season a major zeitgeist moment, but for movie lovers, it was a night of surprises, even when frontrunners nabbed the trophies.
